News broke last year that thousands of depositors in the Mexican financial institution Ficrea had lost their money. Ficrea's management funneled more than $160 million from the financial cooperative to other companies, according to Mexico’s banking commission. An investigation by the Express-News found that companies connected to Rafael Olvera Amezcua, Ficrea’s director, purchased tens of millions of dollars in U.S. real estate and cars.
